Constitution of the Newtown Men’s Shed

1. Name
The name of the association shall be the Newtown Men’s Shed (hereinafter referred to as “the Shed”).
2. Objects and Purpose
The primary objects of the Shed are:
- To promote the health and wellbeing of men in the Newtown area by providing a safe and friendly environment.
- To provide a space where men can meet to share skills, socialise, and work on individual or community projects.
- To reduce social isolation and foster a sense of belonging through communal activity and peer support.
3. Membership
3.1 Eligibility: Membership is open to any person aged 18 or over who supports the objects of the Shed.
3.2 Fees: Members shall pay an annual subscription fee as determined by the Committee. Currently, a voluntary “tea fund” contribution of £1.00 per visit is encouraged.
3.3 Termination: The Committee reserves the right to terminate membership for conduct contrary to the Shed’s safety rules or values, following a fair hearing.
4. The Committee
The Shed shall be managed by a Committee of at least four officers: Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and Workshop Manager. Committee members shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
5. Meetings
5.1 AGM: An Annual General Meeting shall be held once every calendar year. Members will be given 21 days’ notice.
5.2 Quorum: A quorum for a General Meeting shall be at least 25% of the total membership.
6. Finance
All funds raised by or on behalf of the Shed shall be used solely to further the objects of the association. The Treasurer shall maintain accurate accounts and present a financial report at each AGM.
7. Safety and Liability
All members must undergo a safety induction before using any power tools. The Shed shall maintain public liability insurance at all times.
8. Dissolution
In the event of the Shed winding up, any remaining assets after the satisfaction of all debts shall be donated to another charitable organisation with similar objects, preferably within the Newtown area.
This is a living document. Any amendments must be passed by a two-thirds majority of members present at a General Meeting.
