About Newtown Men’s Shed
Our Story
Founded in 2022, the Newtown Men’s Shed began with a simple observation: men in our community needed a place to go, something to do, and someone to talk to. What started as a small gathering in a borrowed garage has grown into a fully equipped workshop and a vibrant social hub.
We are part of a global movement that recognises that men often communicate better “shoulder to shoulder”—working on a task together rather than sitting across a table. Today, our shed is a place where tools are shared, stories are told, and lifelong friendships are forged over the hum of a lathe and the whistle of a kettle.
What We Do
The Shed is divided into several specialized zones, ensuring there is a space for every interest and skill level:
- The Woodshop: Our largest area, featuring everything from basic hand saws to our newly acquired professional wood lathe. It’s the birthplace of our community benches and birdhouses.
- The Metal Bay: Equipped for welding, cutting, and grinding. This is where we tackle heavy-duty repairs and custom fabrication.
- The Community Allotment: Our newest venture—a series of raised garden beds where members grow seasonal vegetables and herbs for our shared lunches.
- The Tea Room: Arguably the most important part of the building. This is our “soft” space for meetings, health talks, or simply a quiet place to read the paper and have a brew.
Our Mission: Beyond the Bench
While we take great pride in the items we build, the “products” of our shed aren’t just made of wood or steel. Our true mission is the wellbeing of our members.
The Shed provides a vital lifeline for men who may be facing retirement, redundancy, or social isolation. We provide a sense of purpose and a routine that keeps the mind sharp and the hands busy. At Newtown, we believe that a healthy man is one who feels useful, connected, and heard.
Who Can Join?
Everyone is welcome. You don’t need to be a “handy” person to join the Newtown Men’s Shed.
- The Expert: If you are a retired tradesperson, we need your mentorship to help teach the next generation.
- The Novice: If you’ve never touched a power tool in your life, we will show you the ropes in a safe, supportive environment.
- The Socializer: If you just want to get out of the house and have a chat, the kettle is always on.
Meet the Team
Our shed is member-run and member-led. Our current committee includes:
